Where do you shower when camping with a teardrop or micro caravan?

For those who enjoy camping but don't want to sacrifice comfort, teardrop campers are an easy way to hit the road and enjoy nature. Teardrop caravans are small, easy to tow and provide shelter when needed.

Micro Caravan Camping Shower and Toilet Setup

However, most of them don't have toilet and shower facilities. Don't worry! There are portable kits that can provide you with a bit more freedom than using public restrooms or doing your business in the woods.

In this blog post, we'll share what our setup looks like and the options available for camping with a teardrop trailer. The facilities you can create in your Teardrop Caravan depend on the model you have. We will discuss our own setup using an Aliner Expedition, as well as other options for different models.

Shower and Toilet Tent

There are many kinds of pop-up tents on the market and knowing what to opt for can be a challenge.

A common consideration is durability in high winds. For our set up, we’re using a double ensuite shower and toilet tent from Joolca. We’ve used the older version of this tent for many years and now we are very excited to share that the new version that’s now available in the UK.

This tent has two separate areas: one for the toilet and one for showering. There are plenty of storage pockets inside to hold your clothes and towels. To increase ventilation the tent is equipped with plenty of zip up windows. With no poles to put together, the tent pops in less than 30 seconds and it also folds down quickly and easily into a small bag.

Toilet

When it comes to the toilet, there are many brands and types to choose from.  We decided on a portable Thetford toilet - the smallest size available. It is easy to transport, and can be easily stored while traveling. The bottom half of the toilet detaches for emptying at the dumping station. This size is sufficient for two people but larger families may want to consider something a little more spacious.

Portable toilets are simple to use; although do remember to follow the instructions on the chemical pack before use. Empty it at a dump point and before rinsing. If you've never emptied a chemical toilet before, it's not as unpleasant as you might think. The chemicals give off a certain smell, but it doesn't take long to empty them at the dump point with most being nicely organised to make it easy.

Joolca HotTap Nomad Shower Kit Set Up

Shower

Owning your own shower facilities is the next level up from owning your own toilet facilities. You can decide if you need shower facilities depending on how long you're usually gone for. If you don't want a full shower system, you already have a place to go for a bucket wash once you've erected the toilet tent.

For our teardrop camper, we've experimented with a variety of shower configurations throughout the years. We used the Joolca HotTap Nomad Shower Kit for our most recent camping setup.

Everything for the hot water shower facility is stored in a blue box that turns into a sink with its own tap. You can enjoy hot water anywhere you can take a propane bottle. The boiler set up is fairly straightforward. Connect it with snap-on gas and water fittings before placing it on the  stand or feet and you're ready to go. You’ll be able to access the temperature and diagnostics displayed on an easy-to-read LED display. Simply flick the switch on the showerhead and the hot water will begin to flow.

There are plenty of ways to make your bathroom experience with a camping trailer more enjoyable and comfortable.

Now that you know about these camping bathroom solutions, all that's left to do is pick your destination and how you'll get there. Take a look at our Teardrop Caravans page for more tips on how to have the best camping experience.
